SLA Centennial Conference

SLA conference is here! I'll be attending sessions on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday so it will make for quite a busy week coming up.

My Contributed Paper is also online and available here.

My schedule looks something like this:

Saturday: How to Become a Federal Librarian

Sunday: Exhibits and Colin Powell's opening keynote

Tuesday: SLA Contributed Papers session...where I'll be presenting followed by a special "Food for Thought" luncheon at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and behind the scenes tour of Smithsonian digitization efforts. If I can keep the momentum going I hope to attend the Mid-Atlantic Chapters reception for the free drink, tarot card reading, and fun networking atmosphere.

Wednesday: Mary Ellen Bates' session on "Beating the Pants off Google" followed by another trip to the exhibits, the closing session, and finish off the conference with a DC Chapter Young Professionals Happy Hour!

Back from Vacation!

I just got back from the most wonderful vacation the other week! I traveled down to North Carolina for one of my best friend's weddings. First, Matt and I stopped off at Durham to visit some of his old grad school friends. The next morning we hit the road to the Murphy's mountain house outside of Mars Hill North Carolina in the Pisgah National Forest. The first couple of days were spent up at the mountain house and included my first white water rafting experience. Later on in the week we headed down to Asheville for sightseeing, shopping, the bachelorette party and of course the wedding!!

CIO Drama

According to an article in Information Week, Vivek Kundra, recently appointed CIO for the Obama administration, is on leave because the FBI is investigating some of his co-workers from the DC government.

There has been so much speculation about the CIO/CTO position and hope for a radical transformation in government IT and information management that this new development really puts a damper on the federal information scene.

Lets hope this investigation gets cleared up quickly and Kundra can get to work on moving federal IT and information policy into the 21st century.

Especially since the CIO is already under deadline.
